Verizon plans to grow its fiber footprint organically, although the provider would consider attractive merger and acquisition targets to accelerate deployment, Chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam told financial analysts.
"So, that would tell you we're sort of tilting toward organic. And our priorities are really what can we do to get off of others lease services to meet our 4G cell densification needs, then 5G, and then our enterprise customers," McAdam said, according to the
"I wouldn't tell you that if an opportunity came up to accelerate it through M&A, we would do it, but most of the fiber companies were built for different purposes. They were point-to-point enterprise sort of services and they donít fit the architecture that we're building today which is multi-use fiber for Intelligent Edge Network," McAdam said. "[We are] certainly leaning toward organic builds to meet Verizon needs to drive our cost down in our performance up."
It will cost less than $20 billion to connect unserved US anchor institutions with fiber, a step that will deliver fiber-based broadband to 95% of the population, a cost analysis conducted for the SHLB Coalition said.
