There's more than one way to deliver high-speed broadband to customers -- and that means operators must have more than one tool in their virtual toolbox.
Without knowledge of multiple technologies such as fiber, various flavors of PON, Gfast, VDSL and fixed mobile, service providers risk missing opportunities or pricing themselves out of prospective customers' budgets, simply by proposing a less favorable option.
And while some customers' automatically request fiber-to-the-premise when seeking high-speed broadband, often it's not the best solution for their connectivity need, said Kurt Raaflaub, head of Strategic Solutions Marketing at ADTRAN and guest expert on an upcoming sponsored BBWN radio show, "Winning the MDU Battle: What's in Your Broadband Toolkit?"
Multi-dwelling units, for example, typically are best-suited for Gfast, which combines fiber-to-the-basement or fiber-to-the-curb and gigabit-speed copper- or coax-based technology that don't demand the disruption of fiber. Indeed, 80% of operators have Gfast plans this year, an April study by Broadbandtrends found. (See 80% of Operators Have Gfast Plans in 2018 – Report.)
"Delivering broadband to multi-dwelling units -- whether apartments, condominiums or row houses -- is top of mind for all service providers. That’s because 40% or more of the population live in them and in urban areas it can be as much as 70%," Raaflaub told BBWN. "However, the diversity of housing types and the availability of quality in-building wiring make deploying broadband into these buildings a real challenge."

Competition among service providers for this lucrative market is due to resident demographics, demand from building owners and the favorable economics of bulk contracts.
