With the July debut of its TV-as-a-Service multi-tenant managed streaming service, MobiTV Inc. expects broadband providers large and small to dive into the crowded live, streaming TV market to see if they can outshine Sling TV, DirecTV Now, YouTube TV, Hulu and PlayStation Vue and many more.
The multi-tenant video delivery solution provider has secured hosted streaming delivery rights from more than 210 major networks, ranging from C-SPAN and Disney to ESPN and Showtime. MobiTV, based in Emeryville, Calif., said its MobiTV Connect managed solution will add more content providers before the quarter ends.
"The MobiTV Connect service… removes a great deal of cost structure from the delivery of video. It is difficult to address competition where the baseline cost of delivery is far less for OTT providers," Charlie Nooney, CEO of MobiTV, told Broadband World News. "MobiTV Connect levels that barrier and places pay-TV operators on more equal footing. Competition demands that you innovate and we believe our solution is at the forefront of innovation; being a software-based platform [we] work on fast pace releases to maintain that innovation edge. Finally the degree of analytics and business intelligence provided will allow the pay-TV operators to make the best real-time decision on the product for their individual market."
To date, at least 35 pay-TV providers have signed on, Nooney said. Broadband providers of all sizes are interested in a managed services platform because they don't want to invest in costly video-streaming infrastructure or content, he said. Since MobiTV Connect works with all retail streaming devices, no set-top box is required, added Nooney. End-users can access content via smartphone, tablet, TV or desktop.
"We deliver the service over a secure, private line, so it never touches the open Internet," he said.
Studios and other content creators want partnerships across markets, but pay-TV relationships often go back many years, said Nooney.
"Content providers recognize the changes in the market better than anyone. They also know the importance of their core customers of pay-TV operators to the overall success of everyone," he said. "They have built this business together and that relationship remains very vibrant."
As a software provider, MobiTV is paid per subscriber, with costs varying depending on whether MobiTV Connect is delivered in-network (available today) or as a managed service, according to Nooney.
