Italy's Fastweb Rolls Out 1Gbit/s FTTH for 5G Small Cell Support![]() Fastweb intends to roll out a 1Gbit/s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network to a total of 30 cities in Italy from 2017, although the internet service provider said the service is already up and running in Milan. A primary function of the ultra-high-speed fixed network will be to support the company's ambition to exploit 5G technology for fixed wireless connectivity. Fastweb SpA (Milan: FWB) plans to make use of small cell technology to build what it termed a "5G ready" network with a target of reaching all Italian cities by 2020. The fiber network will thus play a crucial role in supporting the backhaul requirements of these mini-basestations placed throughout cities. To help it meet that target, it has inked a deal with Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. for the provision of small cells that will support 5G and has also just agreed to lease 3.5GHz spectrum from Tiscali for a rental fee of €12.5 million for the first five years. Under this strategic deal, Tiscali will gain access to Fastweb's fiber network, both to support its LTE network and enable it to offer fiber services directly to its customers. The move forms part of Fastweb's strategy to become a converged fixed-mobile provider with a firm focus on ultra-high-speed services. As it starts to extend its 1Gbit/s FTTH network from January, it also plans to launch LTE and LTE-Advanced services under a new full MVNO arrangement with TIM, offering speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s and 300 Mbit/s. The company previously used the mobile network of 3 Italy. The gigagbit fiber service is next due to arrive in Turin and Bologna, with other cities to follow during 2017. Fastweb said it expects to cover 5 million households with the technology by 2020 together with Flash Fiber -- an FTTH joint venture unveiled by Fastweb and TIM in July. Other plans include the rollout of a fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) network to cover 8 million households and businesses by 2020, offering speeds of up to 200 Mbit/s. Overall, Fastweb aims to cover 13 million households and businesses with FTTH and FTTC networks by this point, equating to half of the Italian population. — Anne Morris, Associate Editor, UBB2020 |
