TIM Shrouds Italy in Ultra-Broadband![]() Telecom Italia (TIM) will form a separate company to focus on ultra-broadband deployment across rural and under-served regions of Italy, part of the service provider's strategy to deliver almost ubiquitous coverage across the nation's population. In its annual report, released March 23, TIM says it will partner with an as-yet-unnamed financial organization to use FTTC architecture to provide speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s to so-called rural "white areas," as defined by the European Union. Through the partnership, Telecom Italia (TIM) will cover Italy with ultra-broadband approximately two years ahead of the schedule the CSP set out in its three-year plan for 2017-2019. In other words, 95% of Italy's population will have ultra-broadband connections by mid-2018; by 2019, coverage will reach 99% of the population via fixed and wireless connections, TIM says. "Over 6,000 municipalities will be affected by the project, with over 7 million homes to be connected," the report says. "The company will offer all operators wholesale connection services, guaranteeing equal treatment." Of the €11 billion (about $11.9 billion) TIM expects to spend on its Italian investments, it will expend almost half -- €5 billion ($5.4 billion) -- to accelerate development of the ultra-broadband network, the CSP says.
Turning to Turin "The 5G technology will certainly cause additional network capacity demand. TIM's network is already adopting the latest technology on the IP and optical networks, in the access and in the long distance," he says. "The design is made in order to cope with the bandwidth growth of the next decade." In addition, the Turin 5G project will incorporate a steady expansion of the city's new mobile broadband infrastructure, with plans to cover the entire city by 2020, according to TIM. The CSP's fiber infrastructure, which already covers most of Turin, will support the new mobile network. "From our perspective as a telco operator, 5G is a major technological breakthrough and a unique opportunity to develop new market segments. In addition, the flexibility of this technology enables municipalities to fully exploit the potential of innovative digital solutions and services to improve city life," Calvi says. "In other words, 5G can link the operator's aim to expand their business with the municipalities’ needs towards becoming fully digital." These digital capabilities include next-generation smart city services such as public transport management, air quality management, security solutions and smart traffic meters, he says.
