Q1 Subscriber Update: Cable Wins, Telecoms Lose![]() The 14 largest cable and telecom operators in the US acquired approximately 960,000 new high-speed Internet subscribers in the first quarter of this year, accounting for about 93.9 million subscribers, a recent study found. "In the first quarter of 2017, the number of broadband subscribers surpassed the number of pay-TV subscribers in the US," said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst at Leichtman Research Group Inc. (LRG) , which conducted the quarterly report. These 14 providers represent about 95% of the market, demonstrating the vast hold only a handful of operators have on the US.
Cable operators outperformed their telecom competitors; cable companies have about 59.4 million broadband subscribers, while communication service providers represent about 34.5 million customers, Leichtman Research found. Indeed, while cable operators gained about 1 million subscribers in this period, the top telephone companies lost approximately 45,000 subscribers during the first quarter, the study said.
