ADTRAN on Wednesday unveiled Mosaic Activate, the first of several scheduled components of its Mosaic Subscriber Solutions & Experience portfolio, a software-orchestration solution designed to accelerate new-customer service activation.
The release further underscores ADTRAN's ongoing transformation into a software and services company, a move demonstrated by CenturyLink's trial of ADTRAN's virtualized OLT 10G NG-PON software-defined access technology, the Broadband Subscriber Management Suite. "These are two separate software modules that perform different functions. Although there are some fairly obvious ways where each has the ability to compliment the other to streamline service configuration and consumption, there are also use cases for each separately," Jeremy Harris, director of Portfolio Management at ADTRAN, said in an email interview. "Mosaic Activate focuses primarily on the end-user interface and an automation engine, while the Broadband Subscriber Management Suite converts traditional monolithic chassis-based edge routers to software for more flexible deployment."
To address operators' growing use of standards-based technologies, Mosaic Activate uses industry standards "wherever possible," Harris said. For example, communication with the residential gateway leverages TR-069 -- both TR-098 and TR-181 data models -- so it can integrate with third-party equipment, he said. The solution already works with some of ADTRAN's third-party residential CPE partners, Harris added.
Using Mosaic Activate, which has shipped for several quarters, operators have integrated "numerous devices" and realized savings across "thousands of residential and business subscribers," according to ADTRAN. ROI primarily arrives in the form of productivity gains as service providers connect more subscribers without adding to their headcount due to Mosaic Activate's simplified network access and connectivity, orchestration and operational optimization, Harris said.
"Customer testimonies suggest that they have seen a ten times increase in the number of subscribers they can connect without increasing the headcount associated with new service turn-up," he added.
Service providers have other orchestration options. But ADTRAN hopes operators choose Mosaic Activate -- and upcoming members of the suite -- to enhance network operations, said Harris. The software works independently of the access technology used to deliver the broadband service, Kurt Raaflaub, head of strategic solutions marketing at ADTRAN, told UBB2020.
"DSL and GPON operators can and have benefited from the capabilities found with Mosaic Activate as well as Next Gen PON and Gfast operators who are actively managing their rollouts using ADTRAN Mosaic," said Raaflaub.
ADTRAN would not disclose pricing at this time.
