Re: Exageration
Yes, modems do become obsolete rather quickly. Perhaps you don't notice but the performance is noticeable when you compare an old one to a new modem. It's the same with computers. Think how much better a new hardware equipment performs.

Re: Exageration
@afwrtier do modems go obsolete that quicky? I don't think we ever had to upgrade our modem, though Optimum did send us some device to enable WiFi that I don't think we're using as we had already bought one.

Re: Exageration
The rental fee comes out to about one modem a year so I would save a little money by buying one but I don't have to worry about the modem that I bought becoming obsolete overnight which is why I choose to rent one for the time being.

Re: Exageration
@afwrtier But don't they add on a rental fee every month to the subscription cost? I noticed that Verizon does that, which is one of the things that makes its service a bit higher than Optimum's in my area -- those hidden and unspecified "equipment" charges.

They don't require it, but it makes my life easier than buying one. If I ever switch back to Century Link (the only other option I have) I would probably buy my own.

Re: Exageration
@afwriter Does Comcast require you to rent their modems? You can usually buy a pretty good one for $100 or less. I picked one up at Walmart one day for $50 when somoene who remain nameless fried the one we had by spilling tea on it.

I'm a little bitter right now because I am dealing with an internet issue that I am almost certain boils down to the modem that I am renting from Comcast is starting to die.

And it doesn't matter if they have a router that's 10-years old: It's our fault their service isn't good.

I understand that this is an exaggeration, but no one asking for 100 meg internet has a 10-year-old router. It seems that routers are a lot like phones with a built-in obsolescence.
