Re: Exageration
@Batye Wow, I haven't seen a typewriter ribbon since some time in the last century! I did have a kind of electric typewriter with some minimal word processing features back in the 90s, but it required special cartridges for printing, as I recall. Also its keyboard was not exaclty durable. I had to pay quite a lot to fix it at one point.

Re: Exageration
@Batye do you stilluse your typewriter, or is there for old time's sake? Aside from some people considering them charmingly quaint and desiring them for decorative purposes, there are some places in the world where they are valued for their function -- particularly the manual ones that require no electricity!

Re: Exageration
Definitely. Now my work/office travel bag is much lighter. The MacBook Air is so slim I can even fit it in my travel handbag, which is great. I can't do that the MacBook Pro. And when I am somewhere for a longer period of time I take both with me because I am used to wroking with two monitors. Add Internet to that and a cup of tea.

In a museum in Stockholm I saw a good collection of typewriters (yes, they are in museums already). There, you could see, as you say, some kind of desk typewriters and also portable typewriters. Because back in the day, business people also had to carry their writing tools, especially writers and journalists.

Re: Exageration
@Susan Definitely pays to have a backup, especially if it's one that serves its own function as a travel computer. I'm sure back in the day writers likely had both heavy and portable typewriters.

Re: Exageration
Ariella: Yes. The problem was that I had to wait until after the holidays because the repair shop where I took it was closed. And holidays or not, I had work to do. After that episode, I got a second hand MacBook Air as spare, which is now also great when I travel because it's much lighter than my MacBook Pro. My next upgrade is going to be a new MacBook Air. It's great for my needs.

Re: Exageration
I guess they are doing that because it's more profitable for them for this kind of project to do it institution-focused rather than individual focused.

Re: Exageration
@Susan I should relay that to the person who spilled the tea -- to watch out for soup, as well. But at least you were able to swap out the keyboard to make it work. I really had to run out to get the replacement modem to get back online and get our VOIP phone to work.

Re: Exageration
They, for instance, are not selling individual devices, they are more institution-focused-which is just fine :)
